Overview

The school provides a sequential seven year integrated learning program in the three strands of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards.

Physical, Personal and Social Learning Strand includes a specialist teacher with a full Physical Education program for all year levels and Sport Education for students in Years 3 to 6.

Discipline Based Learning Strand encompasses the areas of English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, the Arts and Languages Other than English – Japanese. The Arts are supported by specialist teachers in the Visual Arts and the Performing Arts.

Interdisciplinary Learning Strand supports the learning in all areas through the implementation of programs in Communication, Design, Creativity and Technology, Information, Communication Technology and Thinking.

The school provides a diverse range of extra-curricular activities that create opportunities and experiences for students to further develop and nurture the academic, social and emotional development.

The school believes that the development of social skills is a priority at all year levels, and implements the ‘You Can Do It’ program throughout the school. This program, together with a high level of pastoral care, supported by other agencies, endeavours to ensure the emotional security for our students.

The school acknowledges the need for students to develop skills and understandings from a global perspective and to this end has been a part of the International School to School Experience for over ten years. Senior students have the opportunity to travel to countries such as Peru, Argentina, China, Japan and Mexico. An annual exchange occurs with a sister school in Auckland, New Zealand.

Strong links have been established with the local Pre-School. A six week transition program in Term 4 is the culmination of a full year of activities and visits between the school and the Pre- school. Belgrave South Primary is an active member of the Transition Network with local Secondary Colleges – especially Upwey High School and Emerald Secondary College, to ensure that both new and exiting students are well prepared for school life.

The staff of Belgrave South Primary acknowledges and appreciates the contribution of parents to the educational partnership. As an integral part of the local community, the school believes that parent participation in school activities and events provides depth and perspective to the educational programs offered.
